Embrace the history of Hull with the Blue Plaque Trail
Hull is a city with an extremely bright future, but we are also blessed with a storied past.

From William Wilberforce and the Headscarf Revolutionaries to the Spiders from Mars, Hull’s greatest sons and daughters have had an important impact on the world we live in.

The city’s history was celebrated during the huge Heritage Open Days event from 9th-18th September but learning about our history doesn’t have to stop there.

Hull has 30 blue plaques dotted across the city marking some of its most significant buildings, occasions and people. Check out our guide to the historic trail here

Green Tip of the Month

Lagoon Hull pledges to make the most of the city’s place by the water

We know only too well how important managing water can be, but it’s not all about flooding.

There’s an ever-sharpening focus on water waste and there is plenty you can be doing in the home to do your bit.

These include:

  • Swap baths for showers
  • Use a dishwasher rather than a washing up bowl
  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth
  • Fix any dripping taps
Why Lagoon Hull?

Lagoon Hull is the ultimate transformation project.

The proposed infrastructure scheme is centred around the creation of an eight-mile causeway built parallel to our city, in the Humber.

It’s an economic growth project that will support the UK’s levelling-up agenda, unlocking significant residential and commercial development opportunities and creating 19,000 new skilled and semi-skilled jobs, particularly in the emerging low-carbon economy.

It’s a project about improving the lives of local people and creating a city they don’t want to leave, as well as providing total tidal flood protection for Hull for 100 years.

While we continue to raise Lagoon Hull’s profile and target key stakeholders, you can add your name to the ever-growing wave of support for the most transformative project in a generation here.
?! Quiz question !?

Until promotion to the Premier League in 2008, Hull had the unenviable tag as the largest town or city in England never to have had a team play in the top flight of English football.

But which city now holds that unfortunate title?

Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter channels for the answer!

Transport Changes

Work to convert the former Central Fire Station in Hull city centre means the continued closure of the Worship Street junction along Freetown Way.

Drivers are being diverted via Percy Street and Jarratt Street to allow for the ongoing transformation of the site.

The former fire station is being converted into an extension for Ron Dearing UTC to allow it to take on another 80 students.

"Did you know?"

Hull’s population in 1801 was an estimated 21,000 – but by 1901, it was more than 10 times that, showing just how much the city had grown thanks to the expansion of the fishing and shipbuilding industries.

This period was by far the biggest boom in the city’s population in our history. Between 1901 and 2021, a population of 239,000 has increased to just 261,000.
