Falling in Love with Hull
It’s time to head back out on Hull’s Fish Trail, and this month – with Valentine’s looming - it’s all about celebrating love: of our city, its small businesses, and the awesome residents that call it home.
Meandering around Hull city centre and the Old Town, the Trail passes plenty of venues which could be the perfect setting for that love to blossom.
Ferens Art Gallery
Before embarking on the Fish Trail, you could enjoy a stroll around Ferens Art Gallery in Queen Victoria Square. Gaze at the Lorenzetti, marvel at a Stanley Spencer or show off your knowledge of the famous Ferens lions. Why not end your day with a crisp glass of pinot grigio or a Peroni in the Ferens café?
hull minster
It’s potentially Hull’s most beautiful structure, and once loomed over the city. It’s now been overshadowed by surrounding developments, but that doesn’t quash the magic of Hull Minster. You can visit the minster between locations 7 and 8 of the trail, and it’s well worth the visit. Built in 1285 AD, there’s plenty of history to look for, including stained glass windows, pew carvings and poignant memorials.
Tapasya@Marina
Located between points 13 and 14 of the trail, Tapasya is ideal for a spot of lunch or romantic evening meal. Offering a decadent Indian dining experience, a three-course lunch menu starts from just £12.95, with more luxurious wine pairing menus also available. It would be silly not to fuel up mid-trail, wouldn’t it?
The Minerva Pub
This family run pub can be found between sites 17 and 20, and has been offering a warm welcome with plenty of cask ales for centuries. Steeped in maritime history, it’s the perfect spot to sample their fish menu and take in views of The Deep. If you’re walking the trail in the warmer months, then looks out for the Juniper gin caravan.
Walk around Hull Marina
Start by grabbing an ice cream from Oss Wash near the pier at location 19. From there you can either walk out along the pier and read about the sculpture, or simply while away your time walking and talking. If it’s an evening walk, you can gaze at the beautiful lights from the yachts in Hull Marina and the festoons over Humber Street. If you end up near the tidal barrier, make sure to look out for the True Love statue.
The Lion & Key
Find yourself a nook and enjoy eating some of Hull’s best pub food. Located near number 25, Lion & Key is the perfect pub for either a date-date or a mate-date, with a myriad of drinks to suit everyone. Afterwards, you could walk off the homemade fare with a crossing of Scale Lane bridge.
Ye Olde White Hart
Staying with the cosy pub theme, at location 38 you will find Ye Olde White Hart – one of Hull’s oldest pubs. Grab yourself a stool next to the roaring fire and enjoy a conversation over a pint and a share-bag of crisps. If it’s sunny, you might find space in the nestled courtyard, and, if the first floor is open, there’s an excuse to step into history and visit the plotting parlour.
