The stark reality behind East Yorkshire's Puffin's Galore! trail

Imagine the silence of Bempton Cliffs without the seabirds. Sadly, that is a very large possibility for our near future.

Our coastline has been a haven for puffins and seabirds for centuries, with hundreds of thousands of animals descending on Flamborough and Bempton every year to raise their young.

Tragically, the climate crisis is putting our puffins under threat with a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust estimate suggesting we have just 10 years to protect these beautiful birds or face a barren seascape.

A 2021 study from the British Trust for Ornithology indicates that the UK's Puffin population could plunge by as much as 90 per cent by 2050 because of changes in the marine environment caused by global warming.

This is just one reason why climate change needs to be taken seriously.

From July to November this year, Puffins Galore will raise awareness of the endangered wildlife of our coastlines and seas, the global warming crisis and the need for a growth in green energy.

They will also tell the stories of people living on the East Yorkshire coast.

Forty of these beautiful, hand-painted sculptures are currently standing proudly at locations around the East Riding, with our very own Lagoon Hull puffin overlooking the Humber from its viewpoint beside Humber Quays and Hull Marina.

Modelled on the hugely successful and award-winning ‘Larkin With Toads’ and ‘A Moth For Amy’, this public art event is all about bringing the plight of endangered seabirds and climate change to everyone’s attention.

Each puffin, which stand at 1.5m, has been sponsored by a business or institution and has then been carefully decorated by local artists.

At the end of Puffins Galore all the sculptures will be sold, either to their sponsors or at a grand charity auction. The proceeds from these sales will be donated to four charities which were selected for their important role in the protection of our coastal wildlife or for their essential work saving lives at sea.

These charities are: Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, RNLI Lifeboats, RSPB and Hornsea Inshore Rescue.
