Half-Term of the Future

Families dine out in waterside cafés as the gentle ripple of cool water sets the perfect backdrop.

On the water, everyone from pleasure-boaters to kite surfers race along the one of the UK’s most scenic waterways, while people wanting a secluded stroll through nature enjoy an amazing wetland habitat teaming with wildlife.

Friends cycle on by surrounded on all sides by the Humber Estuary on one of the country’s most unique routes, as shoppers indulge in independent stores lining Hull’s impressive new waterfront.

But this is no utopian dream. It is just years from reality.

A half term in Hull’s future could look incredibly different from the already-rich offerings of 2022. Our Lagoon Hull project has hit the headlines in recent years with grand plans to vastly improve the city’s flood defence capability, as well as the additional benefit of a relief road being built across it to relieve the city centre of environmentally damaging traffic.

But the primary focus from the get-go has been to create a must-visit destination with all the tourist boxes ticked, while generating a more desirable location to live and work.

With the pandemic in our rear-view mirrors (hopefully), the focus on work-life balance has never been sharper. Half terms are often a time when parents feel stretched between childcare commitments and the demands of their working life but, in the years to come, this doesn’t have to be the case.

With the ability to work remotely now honed, teams are working across counties and countries meaning a person’s home can now be dictated to by how they want to spend their spare time instead of being focused around the commute.

Hull’s tremendous opportunity to invest in its placemaking agenda has never been so vital. The chances Lagoon Hull will provide could have long-lasting transformative impacts to the day-to-day lives of existing residents and those who are yet to come.
