What has the Lagoon Hull team been up to in 2022?

2022 has been a year of ups and downs for our country. But it has been all systems go for the Lagoon Hull team, working to deliver the most transformational project the region has ever seen.

Our project team has spent the last 365 days sharing more details about how the Lagoon might look, spreading the word in the press, engaging with local students and meeting key stakeholders.

It has been another year of great progress and we are overwhelmed by the support we have received, especially from the public. The message is clear that Lagoon Hull is what people want. Whether tidal flooding puts your home at risk, you’re worried about high quality job opportunities for you or your children, or traffic clogs up your daily commute, the benefits are wide-ranging and highly-valued.

Our team isn’t always in the public eye but we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to drive the project forward. Here are just some of the things we’ve been up to over the last 12 months:

Zoning launch

July saw the launch of Lagoon’s ‘zoning’ plans, which broke down the four sections of the project to help build a picture of the potential end result.

The concept drawings were released on our website and social media, in the media and with a special presentation at the Business Day 2022.

The Living, City, Port and Nature Zones that make up Lagoon Hull contain so many unique ideas that will benefit our city. You can find out more here

Presenting to MPs

Informing MPs of the project’s merits is vital – and that’s been a real positive of this year. Back in May, we met with Alex Sobel MP, Shadow Minister for Nature Recovery and the Domestic Environment.

He praised the potential impact on flood prevention and placemaking – branding the plans as a chance to “secure the future of Hull”.

Mr Sobel was keen to hear about how traffic flow will be enhanced on new and existing routes, with air quality projected to improve as a result of reduced stationary traffic. Another key point discussed were the projection of 19,000 new jobs being added into the economy, including quality apprenticeships.

Capturing the imagination of the next generation

Lagoon Hull is all about creating a city that future generations will embrace.

In November, we led a session with students from Hull College to learn about their aspirations. We presented the Lagoon concept to find out whether it would encourage them to stay in the city and boost their civic pride. And the results were exactly what we wanted to see! It was a really positive response and students were incredibly enthusiastic about the future of Hull.

We look forward to sharing more updates from our visit in the New Year.

We’ve also been talking to various local groups, societies and businesses about Lagoon, sharing how the project will improve their lives and enable their organisations to thrive. If you would like a presentation for your organisation please get in touch with us.

Taking our place in history

Giving back to our community is a key pillar of the scheme, so we’ve been keen to engage with some amazing community projects this year.

Our project director, Paul Hatley, played a vital role in organising the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee flotilla on the Humber. Around 50 boats proceeded from Hull Marina to the Humber Bridge before a huge firework spectacular lit up the sky. Lagoon Hull also sponsored the event.

With thousands of visitors lining the estuary, we also produced the Humber History Audio Tour. This provided the chance to listen to stories of historic events to happen on the waterway. Almost 2,500 people tuned into the two-part series which you can listen again to here.

 Puffins Galore!

In a similar vein, we have welcomed a new member to our team this year. The Lagoon Hull puffin is part of the Puffins Galore! trail which spread across Hull and the East Riding this summer.

The one-and-a-half-metre puffin stands tall at Humber Quays, overlooking boats as they enter the marina. It’s designed with custom artwork, representing the story Lagoon has to tell. Thousands of people have already visited him and, when the trail is brought to an end, he will go under the hammer with all money raised split between Hornsea Inshore Rescue, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

Thank you

We’d also like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you for all of the support you’ve offered Lagoon over the last 12 months. Every social media post you share makes a difference. Any of our events you attend helps. And encouraging friends, colleagues and family members to join the wave of support assists our project. Thank you!

What’s next?

We have some incredibly exciting meetings coming up with key decision makers. So stay tuned, big things are around the corner!
