Our 2021
It’s the end of another strange year, so we thought it was time to review some of this year’s highlights and give you a sneak peek into what’s planned for 2022.
Firstly, we wanted to thank everyone who has got behind the project and joined the wave of support, which is vital to getting this project off the ground.
We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to take our transformational plans forward. It’s been a busy and productive 12 months for the project team, speaking with decision makers and key stakeholders in government and industry to make sure Lagoon Hull will deliver its key aims of providing a wonderful place to live and work for the people of the Humber region.
Environment Agency report
A significant step forward this year has been that our plans were assessed – as part of a bigger piece of work - by the Environment Agency (EA) and the results were incredibly positive.
Following preliminary high-level modelling work by the EA as part of its Humber 2100+ strategy, the independent government body’s research has indicated that a potential ‘lagoon structure’ would be unlikely to lead to raised water levels in other parts of the estuary.
We need to address rising sea levels and the EA is working to develop better and more sustainable plans for the Humber Estuary and its tidal rivers. As part of this work, a team factored Lagoon Hull into its broadscale modelling of the whole estuary to better understand the range of interventions that may be possible.
Three independent bodies - the EA, University of Hull and specialist ABPmer – have now assessed the project. Having three completely independent and aligning studies now presenting a growing evidence base for our proposal, gives us great confidence that the science on this is robust and that we should continue to drive the project forward.
Keeping an eye on COP
Representing significant sustainability benefits, our project team was also keen to keep an eye of the outcomes of the UN’s climate change conference, COP26, this year.
COP26’s objectives have outlined our route to net zero. We believe that environmental considerations need to be at the heart of every new project and they certainly are with Lagoon Hull.
Our region produces the highest amount of carbon emissions of any UK industrial cluster, so decarbonising the Humber is crucial. We have no choice but to deliver Lagoon Hull if we’re going to unlock the region’s true renewable energy potential.
COP26 represented a springboard for change, but its objectives require communities, regions, countries and ultimately the entire world to come together and pledge to make meaningful changes. By encouraging and promoting sustainable innovation, the Humber region will be able to join this revolution – and we’re optimistic that Lagoon Hull can lead the way.
And what’s next?
As 2021 draws to a close, we’re confident about the future of Lagoon Hull.
The next big step is to present our plans to Parliament. Getting Lagoon Hull in front of the right people in government has of course, been a bit of a challenge due to the pandemic. And the way to do this is to show ministers that there’s support for the project in the region. By signing the wave of support, sharing the details with your local MPs and talking to friends and family about the project, you can play your part in transforming our region.
At the heart of the Lagoon Hull project is the need to boost local and regional economic growth, and to create a more desirable location for people to live and work. In 2022, we will be shining a light on how we will contribute to creating an exciting and progressive city that works for everyone.
We look forward to sharing our ideas and getting all-important input from those who will benefit from Lagoon Hull – you and your family.
